August 2019 – Jaroff Design recently completed three project-defining contributions to the Waterline Club, the shared amenities space for Waterline Square, the new $2.3 billion luxury development rising on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. At the heart of this underground complex is a grand atrium anchored by a palatial walkway consisting of two 90-foot, suspended custom glass, metal and wood bridges, a monumental helical staircase and an architectural ceiling, all of which were design-engineered, fabricated and produced by Jaroff Design. The two undulating, cantilevered bridge lengths and staircase, are fabricated out of structural steel and clad with richly-toned and domestically-sourced hard maple. The structure had to be able to disappear within the elegant and minimal wood structure. Our concept of using structural steel as the armature was integral to being able to fit and install in the field, which was the only possibility due to the size, weight and complex nature of each of the bridge/stair elements. Suspended above the bridges, is an acoustic floating ceiling that was designed to act in concert with the walkway. This ceiling is a GFRG structure surrounding a metal ceiling fin system that illuminates the space with variations in light and dark, hue and intensity, cycling the Circadian Rhythm of one 24-hour day. The floating light fin canopy not only creates an environment, but it is integrated with the bridges and stair below with slip joints and pivots that act to stabilize the entire unit. The buildings are due to open by the end of 2019.
September 2019 – For Chanel’s NY Flagship location on 57th Street, Jaroff Design provided a four-story custom hand-hammered white bronze handrail, top cap, and a coordinated custom glass guardrail to complement the elegant stone staircase featured in the iconic brand’s recent renovation of their 57th Street flagship location. This architectural metal fabrication project involved over 800 man-hours of hand-hammering bronze, creating and applying a custom patina and managing the design intricacies involved with merging the stone, glass, and metal. The final result is a nothing-short-of-stunning feature stair for this high-end retail giant.
September 2017 – Jaroff Design was honored to have fabricated and installed the new September 11th Memorial for the City of Hoboken. Located in Pier A Park, the memorial is aligned with the World Trade Center across the Hudson River and runs parallel to the Living Memorial of Ginko Trees that were planted in 2002. This memorial consists of 56 monolithic glass plaques etched with the names and birth dates of the Hoboken residents who lost their lives in 2001, and two end-caps that display the consecration written by the City of Hoboken. Paying homage to Ground Zero, the base of the memorial is made of stainless-steel I-beams and houses separate light-boxes to illuminate each plaque. Jaroff Design also created stainless steel plaques that are embedded in the ground and part of the park landscape. Each is engraved with a statement of an onlooker who watched the attacks from Pier A on that fateful day in 2001.
September 2016 – Jaroff Design completed a two-year collaboration with Yabu Pushelberg on the design of the grand staircase for the new Four Seasons New York Downtown Hotel. Jaroff Design was hired to design-engineer the serpentine staircase so that it would anchor the impressive marble lobby and carry its guests to the conference and banquet facilities above. The challenges of this project were in housing this large, Mondrian-inspired suspended staircase into a narrow portion of the hotel lobby while maintaining its sculptural presence and appearance from both inside the hotel and from the outside courtyard.
September 2015 – We were fortunate this year to consult with Ennead Architects on a significant project for Jazz at Lincoln Center, delivering a Grand Stair that features an industry first; 8-foot wide structural glass treads. Serving as the focal point of the public space at JALC, the Grand Stair is supported by a 30-ft single run of the stringer and weighs in excess of 24,000 lbs. We also design-engineered and fabricated a spectacular curved glass guardrail for the Billie Holiday Terrace that extends 70 linear feet. Additionally, we fabricated a corresponding South Staircase, custom acoustic doors and windows and a contemporary glass guardrail for the Benjamin Menschel Arcade.
August 2011 – Jaroff Design and Mison Concepts is immersed this summer in bringing new luster to a trio of early 20th century Broadway playhouses: the Booth Theatre, St. James Theatre and Walter-Kerr Theatre. Combining form and function, our custom-made, high-end soundproof engineered doors will enliven the ambience of the theaters and enhance patrons’ experience while keeping the landmark status of each venue and paying homage to their original architectural designs. We are honored to have been appointed for these projects and to work on each in collaboration with two of Broadway’s renowned organizations, the Shubert Organization and Jujamcyn Theaters. It is an exciting and busy time for us, with the projects slated for completion by the end of this summer.
Booth Theatre (222 West 45th Street) was opened in 1913 and designed by architect Henry B. Herts. The theatre provides one of the last surviving examples in New York of sgraffito adornment. Booth Theatre is owned and operated by the Schubert Organization and has housed many award-winning plays and musicals including Pulitzer Prize-winning Next to Normal.
St. James Theatre (246 West 44th Street) was built in 1927 and since 1978 has been owned and operated by Jujamcyn Theatres. The theater has been home to many famed musicals, dramas and comedies including Gerwshin’s Tony Award-winning The One and Only.
Walter Kerr Theatre (219 West 48th Street), designed Herbert J. Krapp, was built from start to finish in just 90 days in 1921. The theater is owned and operated by Jujamcyn Theaters and has housed six Tony Award-winning plays including Angels in America.
The Shubert Organization has been at the forefront of the American theater since the start of the 20th century and currently owns or operates seventeen Broadway theaters, one Off Broadway theaters, and three theaters outside New York City. Jujamcyn Theaters, founded in 1956, owns and operates five theaters on Broadway – the St. James, Al Hirschfeld, August Wilson, Eugene O’Neill, and Walter Kerr.
